For some people summer means lying on the beach or chilling out at your summer cabin. But for a bunch of Finnish younglings it means starting your military service.  We reminisced a bit about our army years, and decided to share our best stories with the whole wide world.

Varusteleka's Propaganda Newsletter 7/2019

Summer is here, and almost snow-free (for now)!

It's been a great start of the summer here in Finland. We've had hardly any snow and only a little bit of thunder and hail storms - mostly it's been warm and sunny!

For some people summer means lying on the beach or chilling out at your summer cabin. But for a bunch of Finnish younglings it means starting your military service.

In Finland, we have this thing called mandatory military service. With a population of only 5.5 million people and a ground border with Russia of 1289 km (800 miles), there is a need for proper defence forces. All men are required to serve in the Defence Forces, and women are able to volunteer for service.

We reminisced a bit about our army years, and decided to share our best stories with the whole wide world. You can find our first story here, and we will publish more stories during the summer, always on Fridays.

But we don't want this letter to be just army stuff, so you can also find the results of the Midsummer Bingo, more information about our very own music festival Lekafest, and we're finally launching our long-awaited L4 combat trousers!

Like always, you can also find our Regular Pig offer at the end of the newsletter, so make sure to read until the end!

Good stuff for military purposes, other combat situations and also everyday use:

Army Story: Full Moon in Kiikala

The year was 2008 and our NCO class was training in Kiikala around a small airfield. On a particularly dark night, I was doing my two-hour guard shift standing in a foxhole and monitoring the sparse pine forest in front of my position.

The clothes and equipment issued by the FDF are actually quite good, but people often want to make things a bit more comfortable. This is what people most usually buy for their friend, family member, or significant other in service.

Lekafest 17.8.

Lekafest is coming closer!

We think that we haven't talked about Lekafest enough, so here goes!

Last year, we had our Mega Grand Opening in the form of a huge spectable with music, food and beer. We had so much fun organizing this, that this year we decided to do the same but bigger, better and louder. And so Lekafest was born.

Lekafest is a one-day festival that we're hosting here on our parking lot. There will be food, beer, some other activities and three bands: Gommi & Pommi, Barbe-Q-Barbies and a Finnish metal legend Mokoma!

If you're planning a trip to Finland, now (or actually the middle of August) is the time to do so! You can find more info on our site or the Facebook event.

Midsummer Bingo results are here!

It seems that since we made so much fun of the traditional Finnish midsummer weather, Mother Nature decided to show us what she's got and give us a buttload of warmth and sunshine! Unfortunately this also meant that we had a higher number of people drowning (and police incidents) than last year, a total of five people.

We're still below the average number of drowned people, which is 9, and also beat the snowy midsummer of 2017 by one, so it seems that we're learning something. If we just pay a bit more attention to safety, we can reach zero next year!

With five drownings, the lucky winner Teuvo M. gets a 100 € gift card. Merino hoodies were raffled to Outi P, Aaro-Artturi K, and Tapio M. The winners have been contacted personally.

Save the Oceans with Rudy Reyes!

We had a chat with Rudy Reyes about supporting their non-profit organization Force Blue, which comprises of diver veterans and marine scientists who combine forces to save the world's seas. From every Force Blue support patch 3 EUR goes directly to this organization.
